Behind the scenes of efficient packaging:
A closer look at how the VFFS vertical packaging machine works
As production environments change, efficient packaging solutions are essential. The vertical form packaging machine (VFFS) is just such a solution. It is widely used in many industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, etc. due to its high speed, economical and space-saving features.
Whether you’re new to packaging machinery or already have multiple systems, chances are you’re curious as to how they work. In this article, we are walking through how a vertical form fill seal machine turns a roll of packaging film into a she

1.The Working Process of VFFS Packaging Machine
Film Unwinding and Transport:
The packaging process starts with a roll of film wound on a core, usually called a roll. This film material can be a variety of materials, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, composite film, etc., to meet the packaging needs of different products. The film roll is mounted on the main shaft assembly at the rear of the machine. Through the film conveying system driven by the servo motor, the film is smoothly pulled out from the roll and conveyed to the front end of the machine with constant tension. In order to ensure the stability of film conveying, tension control devices such as dancing arms or tension sensors are usually equipped to eliminate film relaxation or stretching.
Film Tension Control:
During the conveying process, the film needs to maintain appropriate tension to ensure the smooth progress of the subsequent forming and sealing process. The tension control system prevents the film from deflecting or wrinkling during high-speed operation by adjusting the tension of the film.
Optional Printing:
If necessary, printing can be performed during film conveyance. The printing device can be a thermal transfer printer, inkjet printer or laser printer, which is used to print the production date, batch number, barcode, product information or brand logo on the film.
Film Tracking and Positioning:
In order to ensure accurate forming and cutting of packaging bags, the film needs to be accurately tracked and positioned. Photoelectric sensors are used to detect the positioning marks on the film and control the film conveying and cutting position. The film tracking system is used to monitor the lateral position of the film and automatically adjust it to prevent the film from deviating.
Horizontal Sealing and Cutting:
The horizontal sealing device seals the top and bottom of the filled bag and cuts the bag at the same time to form an independent packaged product. The horizontal sealing device usually also uses heat sealing and is equipped with a precise temperature control system.
Finished Product Output:
The packaged finished bag is output through a conveyor belt or chute for subsequent packaging or boxing.
Bag Forming: After passing through a series of guide rollers, the film enters the former (also called forming tube, collar). The former folds the film into a tube and forms different bag shapes as required, such as back-seal bags, three-side seal bags or four-side seal bags. The design of the former directly affects the shape and size of the packaging bag.
Vertical Sealing: After the film is formed into a tube, the longitudinal sealing device (usually a heat sealing device) seals the edges of the film longitudinally to form a continuous tubular bag tube.
Product Filling: The product is accurately filled into the formed bag through various filling systems (such as volumetric, weighing, screw, etc.). The choice of filling system depends on the type and characteristics of the product.
2. Key Components of VFFS Packaging Machine
- Film Conveying System:It includes unwinding shaft, guide roller, tension control device and conveyor belt, which is responsible for film conveying and tension control.
-
Forming device (collar): Folds the film into a tube and determines the shape and size of the bag.
-
Longitudinal sealing device: Seals the edges of the film longitudinally.
- Filling system: Accurately fills the product into the bag.
-
Horizontal sealing device:Top and bottom seals the bag and cuts it off.
-
Control system (PLC): Controls the operation of the entire packaging machine to achieve automatic control.
-
Human-machine interface (HMI):Used by the operator to set parameters and monitor the machine operation status.
3. Advantages of VFFS Packaging Machines
- High efficiency and high speed: It can achieve high-speed continuous packaging and improve production efficiency.
- Various packaging forms and strong flexibility: The bag type and size can be adjusted according to needs to meet the packaging needs of different products.
- Save packaging materials and reduce costs: The use of roll packaging reduces the waste of packaging materials.
- High degree of automation and reduced manual intervention: Automatic control is achieved to reduce labor costs.
